Clare grew up in South East London and moved to the Birmingham suburbs as a teenager. She loved writing even more than reading, but once she got to Sixth Form College ‘creative writing’ disappeared from the curriculum and for some reason it never really occurred to her that you could just carry on writing if you felt like it. She worked in communications in politics and the charity sector, writing articles, press releases, briefings and speeches, but always had stories going round in her head. She did an MA in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University and wrote her first book ‘The Year of The Rat’ while on the course.
